Green burials are Earth-friendly
way to say final goodbye

SAND SPRINGS – Dillon Service is celebrating Earth Day by announcing its green burial services at The Preserve at Woodland.

Green burials are done without the use of toxic formaldehyde-based embalming, metal caskets and burial vaults. Instead, individuals can choose a biodegradable casket made of willow or wood, a shroud made from the person’s own clothing, or a biodegradable urn. Caskets are constructed of plant-derived or recycled plant-derived materials without any toxic chemicals.

Rather than being buried in a perfectly manicured setting with paved roads, individuals rest in a nature preserve with natural trails, wildlife, native plants and trees in special low-impact burial grounds.

The burial can be completely natural or have elements of green, depending on individual tastes, said owner Jerry Dillon.

“We recognize that baby boomers are environmentally conscious and are looking for options for their final disposition that do as little damage as possible to the natural world that is left behind,” Dillon said. “Until the late 19th Century, this is how humanity cared for people, and now many people want to go back to a more natural way of doing things.”

Dillon and his family purchased the Woodland Memorial Park historic cemetery, 1200 N. Cleveland Ave., Sand Springs, which has rolling hills and hundreds of trees, in 2007. It adjoins hundreds of acres of natural forest, which is home to the natural burials.

The family embraced the need for more family-friendly funeral and burial services, as well as burial services that are culturally sensitive. They built a Family Legacy Chapel that is an upscale, rustic cedar lodge with fireplace within Woodland.

The Preserve at Woodland is the premier certified green funeral and natural burial provider in Oklahoma. The first stage of development has been certified as a Hybrid Burial Ground by the Green Burial Council.

Dillon offers green funeral services that will provide everything necessary for home wakes, public visitations, church or chapel ceremonies and graveside burial services that are tailored to the lives of those being honored.
